The predecessor of our institution was established in 1879 as a technical school. Since then it has been training students for a variety of professions within the construction industry. From 1950 it worked as a specialized secondary school while in 1965 it became a higher educational technical school of building. After organizational changes in 1972 the State Presidium founded the Ybl Miklós College of Building with two campuses: one in Budapest (Faculty of Building) and one in Debrecen (Faculty of Sanitary Engineering). The cooperation lasted until 1995. In 1980 the Fire Safety Engineering, - unique in Hungary-, and in 1994 the Construction Management course were introduced. Between 1997 and 2005 the following 3-year courses were accredited by the committee of the Ministry of Education:
  • architecture,
  • civil engineering,
  • urban planning,
  • construction management and
  • fire safety engineering.
In the 1997/98 academic year we had 701 full time students and 247 part-time (correspondence) students. Responding to the decision of the Hungarian government, from 1 January 2000 we merged with five higher educational institutions:
  • University of Veterinarian Sciences, Budapest,
  • University of Agriculture, Gödöllő,
  • University of Horticulture and Food Industry, Budapest,
  • Teacher's Training College, Jászberény and
  • College of  Agriculture, Gyöngyös
under the name of Szent István University. The increase in the number of students required new techniques in administration: in 2002 we introduced the ECTS compatible  credit system and a new online student registration system.

Nowdays the Szent István University consists of the following faculties:
According to the principles of the Bologna Decree and the new Hungarian educational act, in September 2005 we launched our new BSc course in Civil Engineering, then, in September 2006 the BSc courses of Architecture and Construction Management. Our further traditional courses, Urban Planning and Fire Safety Engineering have been integrated into the new BSc courses.
The study period for the BSc courses is 8 semesters for full time students and 10 semesters for part-time students, with the exception of the Construction Management course, where the educational time is 7 and 9 semesters, respectively. To obtain a diploma you are required to have 240 credits.
Our institution currently has 212 employees, of which 92 people are employed in the sphere of research and/or teaching. In October 2009, 1718 full time, 764 part-time and 78 post-gradual students were registered.

Foreign relations
Relying on our traditionally good connections with similar European higher educational institutions, from the 1990's we had been successfully participating in EU and regional programs like TEMPUS,FEFA, CEEPUS,Socrates-Erasmus. With the help of these projects we could develop our technical background and curricula and establish the frame of regular student and staff exchange. Within the LLP-Erasmus program we send out yearly 18-20 students for one or two semesters and receive 8-10 incoming students, in cooperation with our 25 partner institutions. Many of our lecturers represent us in national and international professional organizations and conferences.
The education at our institution is exclusively in Hungarian, therefore a good knowledge of Hungarian is a prerequisite for studying here. Consequently, the integration of foreign students into our institution still faces difficulties. We had experimental English language programmes in the subjects "Ecological Architecture" and “Precast Concrete Structures”. At present we can offer individual consultation of several subjects or of a final project in German or English.
We have no Hungarian language course, however, at some other faculties of the Szent István University our guest students can study Hungarian. Incoming students can join also the general, technical and conversation lessons of English and German.
